The technology patent arms race is heating up—again.

Microsoft Corp.’s MSFT +0.65%agreement to spend nearly $1.1 billion buying and licensing about 1,100 patents covering some of the Internet’s basic plumbing from AOL Inc. AOL +1.06%spotlights the ongoing boom in spending among tech titans for what amounts to the Internet era’s nuclear deterrence.

“This has been a gradual evolution of patents from simple legal assets to strategic financial assets,” said Mark Radcliffe, a partner at law firm DLA Piper who specializes in intellectual property.

The fate of Kingfisher Airlines rests solely with New Delhi. But regardless of the government’s judgment, the fiasco has underscored the hazards of operating an airline in India.

On the verge of bankruptcy, loaded with debt and years of losses, Kingfisher is asking for a lifeline from the government, which is threatening to cancel its operating license. The company has already gotten a cold shoulder from the various banks to which it owes more than $1 billion and from oil marketing companies to which it hasn’t paid old dues.

Roche Holding AG is cutting the price of two expensive cancer drugs in India—and giving them new names—in an effort to gain market share and avoid competition from generic drugs in the fast-growing economy.

The move marks a shift for the Swiss drug maker, which long has argued that consumers everywhere should pay the same price for its medications. By giving the drugs new names in India, Roche hopes to avoid losing pricing power elsewhere, though it isn’t clear the company will succeed on that score.
