The fate of Kingfisher Airlines rests solely with New Delhi. But regardless of the government’s judgment, the fiasco has underscored the hazards of operating an airline in India.

On the verge of bankruptcy, loaded with debt and years of losses, Kingfisher is asking for a lifeline from the government, which is threatening to cancel its operating license. The company has already gotten a cold shoulder from the various banks to which it owes more than $1 billion and from oil marketing companies to which it hasn’t paid old dues.
